6 Great Resources for Would-Be Hoarders

Robyn Griggs Lawrence thumbnail “When someone steals a man’s clothes we call him a thief. Should we not give the same name to one who could clothe the naked and does not? The bread in your cupboard belongs to the hungry man; the coat hanging unused in your closet belongs to the man who needs it; the shoes rotting in your closet belong to the man who has not shoes; the money which you hoard up belongs to the poor.”

–Basil the Great, bishop of Caesarea

Still in spring cleaning mode, I’m down to the hard part. I’ve gotten rid of all the obvious suspects—clothes I haven’t worn in a year, books I haven’t cracked in decades. I know there’s still more to do because my closet remains packed with clothing I’m not currently wearing and I don’t have that serene sense of space that I’m craving. I need a little outside help.

Lucky for me, there are support groups and professional organizations out there to help me let go of my stuff. Just as Alcoholics Anonymous can work miracles for those who love the bottle, these organizations can help would-be hoarders put extra stuff in its place—with someone else who needs it.

Who will help me let go of my stuff?

Clutterless Recovery Groups

A great site written by clutterers for clutterers.

National Association of Professional Organizers

Hiring a pro is a surefire way to get rid of extra stuff—and learn how to organize what’s left.

Unclutterer

Great blog about getting and staying organized. “A place for everything, and everything in its place” is the motto here.

Who will take my stuff?

Goodwill Industries International

This organization is happy to take tax-deductible donations of clothing and household items.

Craig’s List

Sell or give away unwanted items. (Avoid the temptation to shop for “new” stuff while you’re on the site!)

NeighborGoods

Provides online auctions to help you sell your stuff.
