The Natural Home 10.5-inch bamboo bowl is the perfect choice for serving your next fresh creation. This fruit bowl is a welcome addition to the everyday table as well as an entertaining buffet. The bowl stands 3.75-inches tall and is the perfect size to hold an assortment of fruits or salads.

Tough, durable and lightweight, bamboo is a natural in the kitchen. One of nature's most sustainable resources, bamboo is stronger than oak and reaches maturity in just four years — without pesticides. Bamboo's density makes it naturally water-resistant, which inhibits germs and bacteria. It won't scratch your pans like metal and doesn't absorb moisture like conventional wood.

Though used like timber, bamboo is a grass that self-propagates as it spreads underground via a network of rhizomes. A white oak tree takes 120 years to grow to maturity; bamboo takes three-and-a-half to seven years. This self-regenerating plant grows without pesticides and needs very little water; some species grow as much as 3 feet a day. Because of its fast growth rate, bamboo sequesters carbon dioxide at faster rates than hardwood trees — another bonus for the environment.

The editors at Mother Earth Living magazine have selected this and other and bamboo kitchenwares because they are durable, safe and environmentally- friendly.

The Salatin family farm, known as Polyface and located in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley, is one of the nation's premier ecological farms and has been featured in countless print, radio and video media. Exemplifying local food systems and imbedded community-based agriculture, the farm caught the attention of Michael Pollan in his runaway New York Times best-seller The Omnivore's Dilemma (when Salatin refused to ship T-bone steaks to New York).

Behind the glitz, however, the farm struggles with a labyrinth of government regulations and cultural perceptions that terrorize the antidote to mad cows, avian influenza, and food fears. The solution is simple: allow freedom for traditional food growing and purchasing choices.

This book brings to life, with humor and verve, the everyday conflict between the entrenched industrial food system and the local artisanal neighbor-friendly farmer-entrepreneur.

Joel Salatin is also the author of: Pastured Poultry Profit$, Salad Bar Beef, You Can Farm, Family Friendly Farming, Holy Cows and Hog Heaven.

Mother Earth News is pleased to offer study plans for this beautiful, energy-efficient home. The traditional Prairie home style has its roots in the Midwest and is easily recognized by the linear horizontal design, roof overhangs and centrally located fireplaces. This energy-efficient solar home design is optimized for its climate and will perform best in colder areas of the United States.

At about 2,600 square feet, this energy-efficient home has a floor plan design which allows it to be functional while minimizing the heated space and amount of construction materials. This solar home can perform at least 50 percent better than a standard new home. If located in the Great Lakes region, the Solar Prairie Home will require only about $600 per year to heat! These impressive energy savings come from a super-insulated shell and high-performance windows, as well as optimum passive solar design and natural ventilation. Add solar thermal panels and you can cut your heating bill by a total of 75 percent!

This two-story solar energy-efficient home has three bedrooms, and one full bathroom with a wise design component that makes it function as two separate bathrooms while saving you at least $5,000 in construction costs. Each living space is situated to maximize the energy-savings; for example, the kitchen is located in the coldest area of the home, because kitchen appliances create heat, warming up the kitchen without using extra energy.

The solar home plan provides detailed information on this copyrighted energy-efficient home design, including elevation drawings, floor plan, descriptions of design features, the Mother Earth News feature article about the home and information for ordering the construction-ready blueprint.

Designed By Nathan Kipnis Architects, Inc.

Build your own backyard shed, using these blueprints for our toolshed greenhouse. Using recycled or salvaged materials, you can build a spacious, versatile backyard shed for a couple hundred dollars. The demo toolshed for these plans was constructed for only $250!

With its design components, this 10-foot-by-12-foot backyard shed will serve as tool storage and a work area, as well as a greenhouse to overwinter plants.

This toolshed greenhouse is a great place to store tools and gardening supplies. The workbench is handy for all projects because tools can be organized and within reach. The greenhouse portion not only allows light into the work space but makes a good location to overwinter plants and start new seedlings in spring. With all the organizational features and handsome design, the building will be an asset to any backyard.

Almost everything you'll need to build the shed can be found for free on the Internet or at little cost at a salvage yard. For the demo toolshed, the designers found mis-tinted paint at a well-known distributor at no cost. They also found that when friends and relatives learned about their backyard shed they contributed insulation materials or miscellaneous lumber that they were not using. In the end, they saved money by using materials that would have ended up in the landfill.

The toolshed greenhouse plan includes ready-to-build blueprints and step-by-step assembly instructions. This toolshed greenhouse, as well as the story about how the designers came up with the plans and materials to build it, were featured in the October/November 2009 issue of Mother Earth News.

Designed by Puget Sound Home Design.
