I wish I had greater access to natural beauty products and more education about potentially harmful chemicals when I was a teenager. Now, teens and tweens have more information readily available for them, and a handful of homegrown companies are taking an interest in developing natural beauty products especially for teenagers.

Good For You Girls is one of the first natural beauty companies I’ve come across that has taken an interest in teen and tween girls’ health. Developed by mothers Grace Hvasta-Petrarca and Kim Grustas, Good For You Girls came to fruition after the mothers read the Environmental Working Group’s startling 2008 report stating that teen girls are widely exposed to hormone-disrupting chemicals from cosmetics.

When Hvasta-Petrarca and Grustas weren’t able to find many natural beauty products specially formulated for teenagers’ sensitive skin, they took it upon themselves to develop Good For You Girls and make it as attractive to teen and tween girls as possible. The fun, bright pink and white packaging is printed with water-based soy inks, and the bottles are PET #1 easily recyclable plastic.

While I’m way out of my tween years (thank goodness!), I took the time to try Good For You Girls Complete Skin Care Kit for a few months. My favorite product in the kit is the gel cleanser; its gentle, soap-free formula is perfect for every day cleansing and makeup removing. The 2-ounce bottle is perfect for travel. The gel cleanses and gently moisturizes with organic chamomile, green tea and vitamin E. Good For You Girls Gel Cleanser has a safety rating of “2” on the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep Cosmetics Database, meaning it’s a low-hazard product. The other two products in the kit, refreshing toner and oil-free moisturizer, are also rated low-hazard “2” and “1.” Good For You Girls is a signer of the Compact for Safe Cosmetics and a member of the Natural Products Association. Good For You Girls products are also vegan-approved and cruelty-free.

It’s essential to establish good habits at a young age. Good For You Girls is doing a fantastic job of providing a forum for young girls to learn about healthy skin carefind affordable beauty products and feel good about themselves. I can’t wait to see what Good For You Girls comes out with this spring–body care is next on the list!
