Holiday on a Budget: Gourmet Biscotti

A.TilsonThis year, like most people, I’ve had to get creative with my gift-giving. (It was either that or take out a school loan to buy holiday presents.) Thankfully before I started emptying my wallet and adding to my debt, a friend suggested I forego my grand gift-buying and budget with some baking.

My first choice was biscotti for a number of reasons: I’m not an experienced baker, so I’m easily overwhelmed with too many recipes. Buying simple biscotti ingredients will hopefully save me some money. Plus, biscotti seem to last longer than other baked goods, which will put less pressure on my family and friends to scarf them before New Year’s. Instead, if they have the perseverance, they can lengthen their biscotti indulgence far past the twelfth day of Christmas. And each time they take a–hopefully–delicious bite, they’ll think of me!

This gift idea won’t only be enjoyable for my friends and family but for me too. Instead of agonizing over the perfect gift or wasting time circling the mall, which is only fun for about an hour, I can spend the day playing festive tunes and baking my cares away. To make my gift even more special, I’ll pack it in a decorative, airtight container to keep it fresh, add a nice coffee mug and, most importantly, include a copy of the recipe.

Here are some of the recipes I can’t wait to try:

Chocolate-Almond Biscotti
Orange Biscotti with Basil
Lemon or Anise Basil Biscotti
Almond-Fennel Biscotti
Rosemary-Almond Biscotti

Do you have any biscotti-baking tips to share with me? What are some of your favorite gift-giving ideas? Leave me a comment and let me know!
