Google Goes Green

Google has committed hundreds of millions of dollars to develop renewable energy and reduce the world's dependence on coal.

Google Inc. is making a big committment to the environment, pledging to find a renewable energy source that can produce one gigawatt of energy—enough to power San Francisco—more cheaply than coal-based energy within the next five years. Part of the Internet giant's motivation lies in their developing plans to allow users to store files and images online on Google machinery rather than on individual PCs, a system that will make Google's data centers more energy intensive. Already having made eco-friendly business moves such as reducing their energy use by half last year and drawing about 30 percent of its headquarter's energy from wind energy, Google co-founder Sergey Brin said at a press conference that the company plans to develop alternatives so there are eco-friendly options to power its own mechanisms. Read more of this story...
