Green Builder Gives Airstream Eco-Friendly Makeover

I’m jealous. Green builder Jim Gooley’s eco-friendly Airstream is exactly what I’ve been dreaming about for years—ever since Carol Venolia planted the idea in a great 'Trailer Treasure' article.

Gooley took the same principles he uses to create natural homes and transferred them to his Airstream trailer. He installed cork floors and bamboo countertops and cabinets. The walls are covered with clay plaster and painted with low-VOC paints. Gooley also used energy-efficient LED lighting, recyclable aluminum molding and repurposed materials left over from other jobs he’s worked on. Even the furnishings have been graced with eco-friendly fabrics, and the bed is made of natural latex. In the future, Gooley plans to install solar panels.

Gooley partnered with Livingreen to remodel the trailer. He displayed the Airstream at the Alternative Building Expo in Santa Monica, California, this year.

As Carol Venolia recently pointed out in her '60 Square Feet of Wisdom' article, living in tight quarters while on the road can be greener than staying at home—even given the gas-guzzling nature of most RV’s.

Summer’s here—and I’m ready to hit the road.
