New York’s Greener Gadgets Design Competition will come to a close this week, with judges picking a winner from a diverse group of products. The competition, held in conjunction with the annual Greener Gadgets Conference, showcases conceptual product designs that focus on reducing carbon footprints, supporting sustainability and otherwise aiding in energy conservation.

Take a look at a few of the 18 designs making their debut at the competition. Here’s how these funky designs work:

• “Corky,” a wireless computer mouse with a recycled cork shell, looks different than any mouse I’ve seen. With insides made of 100 percent recycled plastic, the magic of this design is that, despite having no cords, the mouse requires no batteries. Corky’s entirely powered by captured energy—that is, the movement of your hand. Now that’s high tech.

• “Rocco, the “energy pal,” puts a modern twist on the traditional rocking horse. When children rock on this horse, the energy from the movement is captured and used to charge Rocco’s handles. The more they rock the horse, the brighter its handles glow. The handles can then be removed and used as flashlights or nightlights. Rocco’s made from 100 percent recycled plastic.

• The Orange Solar Tent looks a little bit like something out of a sci-fi movie. The tent is solar-powered by solar threads woven in with traditional fabric, which gives it flexibility. It harvests enough energy to power basic camping gear, and also provides a wireless Internet connection.

These are just a few that caught my eye. Check out the finalists and leave me a comment with thoughts on your favorites. Winners will be decided by judges and audience votes (check out the website to see how products are faring).
