The American Institute of Architects has announced a goal to make all buildings carbon-neutral by 2030. To help meet this goal, the AIA has a new online tool that helps architects predict energy use for all their projects—not just the ones seeking green certification. The AIA tool is designed for easy use, regardless of the size of the architecture firm or the buildings.

The Excel-based tool asks users to enter project use type (from a drop-down menu), gross square footage and predicted energy-use intensity. It also requires users to answer two yes/no questions: Is the project interior only? Is the project modeled? Using that information, the tool creates three easy-to-read graphs, which architecture firms forward to the AIA as part of their voluntary participation in the AIA’s 2030 commitment program.

The tool can be found on the AIA’s 2030 Commitment home page under the Resources tab.
