In The News: FDA Issues Cilantro Recall

J.PattonJust as the latest food poisoning scare, which broke death toll records, is fading off into the distance, another is just emerging—in the form of one of my favorite culinary herbs, cilantro. On Monday, Pacific International Marketing, or Pacific, a produce distributor based in California, announced a cilantro recall on more than 6,000 cartons of their cilantro. Tests detected a sample of the recalled cilantro was positive for salmonella.

Although there have been no reported illnesses, The California Department of Public Health is still pairing up with the FDA and Pacific to coordinate the recall. The cilantro came from Salt River Farming in Phoenix. The cilantro was distributed to Walmart and Giant Eagle stores in California, Arizona, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Indiana, South Carolina and Missouri.

The bunched cilantro is bound together with a twist tie labeled “Pacific;” the UPC code is 3338380104. For pictures of the product, click here.

Salmonella poisoning can be especially devastating to children, who are also the most likely to be affected by it. Salmonellosis can also severely infect older adults and those with impaired immune systems.

Those who have contracted salmonella poisoning typically suffer from diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps. Although most people recover without treatment, some cases may require hospitalization.
