Tea House Dreaming

Robyn Griggs Lawrence thumbnailIt’s Friday afternoon, looking into a long weekend. And every once in a while, you just have to do a little daydreaming. If I had a yard (maybe again some day) and unlimited resources, I would have this lantern-like tea house. A proper tea house is a luxury I believe in.

The family that built this tea house also uses as a meditation space and a stage for music recitals. It has an origami stair and a 4 inch thick opaque wood entry door. The architect who designed it says it brings “a sense of otherworldliness meditation.” I just relish the stillness it brings. It doesn’t matter that I’m not likely to have a tea house, or even a yard, any time soon. For this moment, I’m enjoying this one.

This tea house, designed by David Jameson, was one of eight recipients of the The American Institute of Architects (AIA) 2011 Small Project Awards, established to recognize small-project practitioners for the high quality of their work and to promote excellence in small-project design.
