Robyn Griggs Lawrence thumbnailLeap Adaptive has launched its smallest—and greenest—home plan, a 480-square-foot customizable dwelling that’s packed with environmentally friendly features. The Hummingbird is an energy efficient, affordable green home that’s perfectly suited for use as a home, a guesthouse, a cabana, or a mother-in-law flat. The home has a bedroom suite, a kitchen suitable for energy-efficient gizmos, a cozy greeting room with a one-dimensional ribbon fireplace and a veranda. With a passive photovoltaic design framework and low-VOC materials and finishes, this home is both sleek and comfy. Available as a set of designs, as a pre-fabricated do it yourself building kit, or as an assembled unit, it starts at an affordable $79,995.

Green features include cementitious exterior cladding; Trex recycled-content decking; dual-pane aluminum windows with dual-pane low-E glass; a cool roofing system; low-mass structural insulated panels (SIPs) for wall, roof and floors; low-flow plumbing fixtures; Energy Star-rated HVAC and lighting systems and a tankless, on-demand water heater.

LEAP Adaptive is a home design group in San Diego, California. Design director Brian Darnell’s hardheaded approach uses up-to-date green engineering science to prove that less really can be more. “The lust for size and magnanimousness has given way to the recognition that the economics and ecology of our flattening universe can no longer stomach such lavishness,' he says.
