Paperworks Studio’s Recycled Holiday Cards Create Jobs for People with Disabilities

Holiday cards from Paperworks Studio are not just great for the planet—they provide jobs for people with disabilities. The cards are made from recycled materials like Lee blue jeans, coffee, sweaters and beer. Paperworks Studio, a program of Goodwill Industries of Northern Michigan, employs people with disabilities to make these cards—which helps them earn a paycheck and make a positive contribution to the community.

(See a video about Paperworks Studios.) These cards have caught the eye of some companies (including Lee jeans and Baabaazuzu) and some national media including the Associated Press.

The cards available include:

  • Wheelchair Art Cards – with a background ‘painted’ with artists’ wheelchairs
  • Dancing Tree-O - shining colorful cards with dancing trees
  • Falling Flakes –shimmer pewter cards made from recycled boxes
  • Snowing Rose Petals – cards made with rose petals

See photos of the cards.

Paperworks Studio is just one example of a Goodwill social enterprise—that uses business methods to solve a social problem. People with disabilities have higher rates of unemployment than the rest of the population even though they are regarded as dependable workers who need little or no accommodation to do their jobs.
