Aromatherapy has been traditionally used to encourage and enhance moods through fragrance. The most common modern uses of aromatherapy usually involve relaxation and stress relief, but depending on the essential oils you use and how you apply them, aromatherapy can stimulate an increase of energy, soothe nausea, fight infection and aid the healing of wounds and rashes.

Want to learn more about aromatherapy? Aura Cacia, an aromatherapy company associated with Frontier Natural Products and the Simply Organic brand, recently released its own iPhone application. If you’re a beginner to aromatherapy, this may be just the mobile information unit to help you decide what to try first.

The app seems to be split into three sections. The Aromatherapy Essentials section provides information about the healing properties and origins of 22 essential oils. Aromatherapy Benefits details 16 ways in which aromatherapy can be beneficial to your body or life, including suggested oils and effective uses for them–like massage or diffusion. Finally, you can explore new essential oil blends and ways to use them in your daily routine with the Aromatherapy Formulations section. A sample page of essential oils features bergamot, carrot seed, cinnamon leaf, clary sage and clove buds.

The App is free, and can be found here.

Don’t have an iPod touch, iPhone or iPad? It may be a little less convenient, but feel free to explore the benefits of aromatherapy in a more traditional long-form with the Herb Companion archives!
