If you happen to live in Texas (or if you can make the trip), there’s an herb festival coming up that might interest you. The Seventh Annual Rockport Herb Festival is being held at the Paws and Taws Convention Center in Rockport-Fulton Texas on Saturday April 9, 2011 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. I’d love to go myself, but I can’t really afford the 14 hour one-way drive right now.

The Rockport Herb & Rose Study Group was founded in 2003 and meets weekly to discuss all aspects of growing and using herbs, including explorations of historical significance. You can find their informative herbal blog Rockport Herbies.

Every year the festival boasts an array of speakers for many herbal topics, including gardening, cooking and herbal products. For anyone interested in finding new plants, recipes or fun herbal products, there will be ample opportunity to explore the vendors.

Herb festivals are great places to find new plants and learn gardening skills.

This year, Susan Wittig Albert will be a speaker. She is the author of the herbal-themed China Bayles mysteries and the Cottage Tales of Beatrix Potter series. (Check out this article to learn more about this herbal author or our archives for more about the books.) For a more direct approach to herbs, the festival will also feature Judy Barrett, founder of Homegrown Texas Magazine and author of What Can I Do with My Herbs and What Makes Heriloom Plants So Great?. And don’t forget the delicious food: Among the numerous cooking demonstrations will be Chef Kevin Argetsinger.

If you attend the festival (or any other herb festival for that matter), leave a comment to let us know about it! I’m hoping to make it to at least one this year, so hopefully my next blog on the subject will be to tell you everything I learned!
