Climate Change Lengthens Pollen Season, Worsens Allergies

Reader Contribution by Susan Melgren and Web Editor

Spring is just around the corner, which means it’s time for gardening, outdoor living–and the return of allergies. Winter may be thawing, but if you suffer from seasonal allergies, it’s time to gear up for another long haul: ragweed season.

Over the past 15 years, communities in Canada and the northern United States have extended the length of the ragweed pollen season, adding anywhere from 13 extra days in LaCrosse, Wisconsin, to 27 days in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, onto the ragweed pollen season. The longer pollen seasons are tied to winters with fewer freezing days and a later first frost–findings that are consistent with climate change research.

Longer pollen seasons could mean more bouts of asthma and serious health complications for allergy suffers. Get relief from seasonal allergies with these natural remedies for treating allergies.
