Recycling is important, but you shouldn’t have to live with an inconvenient mess while you wait for recycling day to arrive.

To accommodate her specific recycling needs, McKinney designed her own containers. “We hired a local welder to make stainless steel boxes that fit in side by side in a standard cabinet width,” McKinney says, explaining that her family doesn’t use many glass or metal containers, so they didn’t need much storage space for them. “We had the containers made with enough space left on top so that your hand can slip into the cupboard with the recyclable without even pulling out the slide drawer. And when we do want to slide the drawer all the way out, we just grab the top of the recycling bin.”
