The Pennsylvania Heartland Herb Society, a unit of The Herb Society of America, will help celebrate the 2012 Herb of the Year, the rose, at its 30th herbal symposium this year. The symposium will take place June 18 and 19 in Robesonia, Pennsylvania.

Day one will feature an eye-opening lecture on the versatile and beautiful rose by Sue Weisser, an active member of The American Institute of Floral Designers. Following the lecture, participants will have the opportunity to visit a number of shops with a selection of garden arts, handcrafted objects, and plants. Attendees can also take an Herbal Learning course, visit the Conrad Weiser school garden, purchase raffle tickets or network with other herb enthusiasts while enjoying refreshments. After lunch, more workshops, including classes on the proper use of garden tools and making herbal sorbets and ice creams, will be offered.

Day two will feature a garden bus tour and banquet. The bus will travel to many diverse sites. The first stop will feature the John Paul II Center for Special Learning, where a PHHS unit member named Priscilla Plucinsky has passed on her love of gardening to the special needs children and young adults who attend the school. Next, the bus will stop at the home of Roger and Cindy Harris, where visitors will find a fish pond, shade garden and intricate stone walls. Later on, participants will visit “Wildflower Acres,” which has gained such popularity that people often stop at the two campgrounds nearby simply to take their own personal tours of the gardens. Esbenshade’s Garden Center will be the last stop of the tour, where experts will offer professional gardening advice and information. Following the tour, a banquet of pan roasted chicken breast roulade, mixed field green salad, oven roasted potatoes and more delicacies will follow.
