Food Wise: Recipe for a Healthier Super Bowl Party

Try these small tips to cut out unhealthy foods without missing on the fun.

THE BAD NEWS: More than 50 percent of all electricity used to power home electronics, including your television, is consumed while they’re turned off. That’s because you don’t really click them off; you actually put them on standby. So even after the Super Bowl ends, your energy bills take a hit and the environment is wide open and defenseless against global warming.

THE GOOD NEWS: Energy Star-qualified home electronics in the “off” position use up to 60 percent less energy than conventional equipment. Manufacturers such as Panasonic, Pioneer, Sony, Emerson, Apple, Gateway, and Sharp make Energy Star-qualified home electronics, including flat-screen TVs and DVD players, home theater systems, and digital video recording units (similar to TiVo). If every TV sold this year carried the “Energy Star,” we would remove 9 billion pounds of greenhouse gas emissions—the equivalent of taking 70,000 cars off the road.
