• 2 tablespoons frankincense
• 1/4 cup juniper leaf
• 1/2 cup sandalwood
• 2 tablespoons cinnamon
• 2 tablespoons patchouli
• 1 cup plus 1 tablespoon powdered cedarwood (Juniperus virginiana)
• 3/4 cup water
• 1 teaspoon potassium nitrate
• Tragacanth powder as needed
Romantic Incense
• 1/4 cup ground lavender flowers
• 1/4 cup ground rosemary leaves
• 1/8 cup ground rose petals
• 1 cup plus 1 tablespoon red sandalwood powder
• 1 cup plus 1 tablespoon water
• 1/2 teaspoon plus pinch potassium nitrate
• Tragacanth powder as needed
Japanese Incense
• 6 tablespoons star anise, powdered in blender
• 1 teaspoon cherry oil
• 1 1/2 cups sandalwood powder
• 3/4 cup water
• 1/2 teaspoon potassium nitrate
• Tragacanth powder as needed
Indian Incense
• 3 tablespoons cinnamon
• 5 tablespoons sandalwood
• 1 tablespoon cloves
• 1 tablespoon musk rose (Rosa moschata)
• 1 tablespoon benzoin
• 1 tablespoon curry powder
• 1 teaspoon jasmine oil
• 1 teaspoon musk oil
• 1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons powdered willow charcoal
• 1/2 cup plus 3 tablespoons water
• 3/4 teaspoon potassium nitrate
• Tragacanth powder as needed
Liquid, a binder, and powdered aromatics make the basic incense dough.
Most fragrant botanicals can become incense.
