HALL Winery St. Helena in the Napa Valley-area recently became the first California winery to earn the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold rating.
The construction project began in 2008 under celebrated architect Frank Gehry, whose most famous works include the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao and Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, and whose work has earned him the Pritzker Prize, architecture’s highest honor.
“Building green is consistent with how we run our wine business, as is farming our vineyards organically,” President Mike Reynolds says. “Going for the LEED certification with our new winery building was a logical extension.”
The LEED Gold certification is the second highest rating awarded by the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED program. This means the building had to earn at least 39 of 69 possible points.

In addition to building green, HALL Winery makes green a priority in its production process.
“At HALL Wines, we grow our own grapes and craft our wines, and so we are obligated to ensure the health of the land, as well as that of the greater Napa Valley ecosystem,” says owner Kathryn Hall.
The winery follows organic farming practices. It is two years into a three-year organic wine certification process with California Certified Organic Farmers. To be selected, the farm must be synthetic fertilizer- and pesticide-free for three years. Hall Winery hopes to meet the standards of the CCOF by its final farm evaluation in March 2010.
