Your Best Slipper Forward

Acorn’s line of Eco Spa slippers have linings made from organic cotton, soles with recycled content, footbeds made with CFC-free polyurethane and uppers of natural and renewable yak down, wool and hemp. “The unique blend also makes them supersoft,” says Acorn marketing manager Sonya Purington. Acorn has an active recycling program and is continually building partnerships with suppliers that have sound eco-practices. Acorn Eco Spa Slippers (for men or women): about $44. (207) 786-3526.

Kuku for Kids

Teri Dimalanta and Laura Mameesh of Kukunest both had children moving out of their cribs but found that eco- and kid-friendly bedding was limited—and expensive. So they designed their own line. “It was a challenge to find socially and ecologically responsible textiles,” Dimalanta says. They chose Öko-Tex-certified cotton percale because the European standard requires that no harmful chemicals or harsh dyes be used in manufacturing. (Dimalanta says the company is actively seeking a USDA-certified organic cotton source.) Kukunest does not ship its products in PVC wrapping. Kukunest Lantern twin set: $119, at retailers nationwide. (510) 530-5858.

Made in the Shade

When interior designer Craig Swanson couldn’t find window coverings that met his environmental standards, he created Earthshade. “We use as much rapidly renewable material as possible—grasses, reeds, bamboo and other cellulose fibers,” Swanson says. “We try to be chemical-free, both for user safety and worker safety.” An 8-by-10-inch swatch is available at no charge, and the custom-made blinds are shipped in compact, recycled-cardboard tubes. Prices vary. Earthshade Red Sanctuary, 36 by 48 inches (95 percent shading): $226. (413) 528-5443.

Fluff ‘n’ Stuff

The airy kapok fibers in Vivetique pillows are harvested from pods on the Latin American ceiba tree, providing ongoing employment in developing areas. The pillow is covered in unbleached and undyed certified organic cotton ticking. “We like organic farming, as it gives you a stronger and healthier fiber,” says Vivetique vice president Scott Carwile, whose father and uncle were migrant cotton pickers. Kapok is soft, moisture-resistant and free of dust and feather particles, which can cause allergic reactions. Vivetique Kapok pillow: $90. (800) 365-6563.

Poetry for Sleep

“We believe in classic simplicity,” says Haiku Designs marketing manager Elissa Lewis. Haiku’s Tokyo and Kenso beds are made from Forest Stewardship Council-certified wood and meet European Union E1 standards, which require no formaldehyde or harmful offgassing. “We want to offer our customers products that won’t harm the planet, and we also want to make sure that when they get the products home, they’re healthy,” Lewis says. Tokyo queen-size bed: $2,799. Kenso queen-size bed (no headboard): $1,499. (800) 736-7614.
