The Art of Home: Straw-Bale Building in Colorado

A couple builds an artistic, nature-inspired dream home with the help of their community – and without a construction loan.

The thick, hands-on nature of earthen plaster allows for custom molding. In the bedroom, Rick and Naomi created deep windowsills and an embellished “truth window” where visitors can see the straw bales inside the walls.

Rick and Naomi Maddux wanted to design an unconventional home. Using standing-dead trees on their property for posts and beams and salvaged furnishings, the two created a quirky, unique home filled with rescued furniture and Rick’s handmade woodwork—brightly painted by Naomi.

The kitchen reveals Naomi and Rick’s shared passions for art and nature, with a rustic wood slab countertop embedded with sections of stained glass mosaic. Vintage door pulls offer a stately contrast to brightly colored handmade cabinetry, and décor includes potted herbs and utilitarian dry goods jars juxtaposed with original abstract artwork.
