Model Remodel: A Colorful Green Renovation in North Carolina

A North Carolina residential designer uses her ultra-green remodel as a mode of artistic expression and a model for green building in her community.

The site’s deep slope created drainage issues. By elevating the main home to driveway-level and incorporating a pond and a lovely water garden (with help from Jan Enright Creations), Jenny was able to save the original home.

By adding one-and-a-half stories on top of her original lakeside home, Jenny Pippin was able to use the site’s natural grade to her advantage, eliminating drainage issues and creating a bright, sunny living space for herself and her husband.

Wes is an avid gardener, so Jenny incorporated a gardening mud room next to the garage entrance. The plants also help filter garage fumes.

Jenny incorporated six porches into her home’s design, and she says there is one for just about any weather in North Carolina. Although they added one-and-a-half levels onto the existing home, Jenny and Wes cleared no additional trees, and they made their home much more efficient. Because they both have home work studios, they use every space nearly every day.

Fans of cooking and entertaining, Jenny and Wes wanted the kitchen to be an open gathering place on the main floor.

Jenny and Wes love bright, bold colors, and they worked with an interior designer to create a cheery palette. The spiral staircase that anchors the “great room”was a salvage find Jenny and Wes painted.

A reading nook in Jenny and Wes’ upstairs office space offers a spot for relaxation—and serious study!

A wall of windows and adjoining porch tie the living room to the wooded backyard. A sleek metal fireplace surround and mellow bamboo floors balance the couple’s bold paint and décor choices.
