Once an outdated, energy-guzzling 1948 rambler, the Sustainable House built by Live Green, Live Smart just outside of Minneapolis is the first remodeled house to receive a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.

1. Secondhand furniture throughout house

2. Central system to manage lighting and climate control, reducing energy waste

3. Dimmable CFLs

4. Energy-efficent sound system and TV

5. Sliding glass doors for natural light

6. Range vent for air quality

7. Central vacuum outlet

8. New furniture made from eco-friendly materials

9. Low- or no-VOC paints over insulating drywall that contains recycled gypsum and fiberglass

10. Salvaged hardwood floors coated with low-VOC finish

11. Triple-glazed, argon-filled, low-e windows

12. Reverse osmosis faucet for pure, healthy water

13. Natural quartz countertops made in a GreenGuard-certified factory, sealed to eliminate the need for toxic cleaning products

14. Cabinets made with Forest Stewardship Council-certified maple veneer, low-VOC varnish and formaldehyde-free particleboard

15. Ceiling fans to reduce cooling costs
