• Flowers and Herbs of Early America
Lawrence D. Griffith, photography by Barbara Temple Lombardi
The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, 2008
292 Pages; $50.00

Flowers and Herbs of Early America is a thoroughly documented survey of 58 species of flowers and herbs, illustrated with glorious modern photography and period hand-colored engravings. Although the book is a dazzling treat for armchair gardeners, it is also an important contribution to knowledge of colonial plants and growing methods. As curator of plants for Colonial Williamsburg, author Lawrence Griffith has drawn upon years of research and field trials to compile this in-depth collection of old-fashioned favorites, such as all-heal, love-lies-bleeding, devil’s claw, ragged robin and many more. Highly recommended.
