Homemade Liqueurs with Herbs: Italian Herb Liqueur

<p>
<em>Makes 1 pint<br />
</em>Italian herb liqueur is a sweet combination that’s full of flavor.</p>
<ul>
<li>1½ cups vodka</li>
<li>6 bay leaves</li>
<li>1 sprig rosemary</li>
<li>10 mint leaves</li>
<li>10 chamomile flowers</li>
<li>10 sweet basil leaves</li>
<li>3 cloves</li>
<li>3 saffron filaments</li>
<li>Zest of 1 lemon</li>
<li>2 cups sugar</li>
<li>1 cup water</li>
</ul>
<ol>
<li>Combine vodka, herbs and lemon zest in a clean glass jar. Cover and let stand in a cool, dark place for 3 weeks, giving the mixture a shake every few days.</li>
<li>Combine sugar and water in a small saucepan. Boil until the sugar has completely dissolved. Allow to cool.</li>
<li>Strain vodka mixture through a coffee filter into a clean jar or bottle with an airtight lid. Sweeten to taste with the sugar syrup. Cover and let stand for 4 weeks. Store in a cool, dark place for up to 1 year.</li>
