Finding a natural solution
With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, now is the time to start thinking about what gifts to give your loved ones. This year, forgo the store-bought goods in favor a gift handmade with love. Nothing says “I love you” better than a gift you spent valuable time creating, and your significant other will recognize and appreciate that extra effort. From homemade cards to hand-poured candles, these seven homemade gift ideas are sure to get your green Valentine’s Day off to a good start.
1. Homemade Cards
Do you feel like store-bought cards never express what you really want to say? Then forgo the kitschy, schmaltzy cards that fill every store this time of year and make one that says what you really want to say!
You don’t have to be really creative to make a good homemade Valentine’s Day card. Search your home for items you can use to bedazzle plain paper: pipe cleaners, buttons, ribbon, salvaged wrapping paper and more. Have you saved Valentine’s Day cards from years past? Cut out the images you like and pair them with words that express your love! Your sweetie is sure to give you an “A” for effort!

2. Photo Collage
Looking at pictures of good times past is a sure way to spark fond memories—and a little romance. Gather photos of you and your Valentine. If scrapbooking is your thing, go for it! If you’re a little design-challenged, opt for a simpler gift such as a photo flipbook, collage frame or standard picture frame. For an extra-special touch, try making this family photo lamp shade project.
3. Hand-Picked Bouquet
Conventional flowers contain pesticide residue and are often imported from South America. If you live in an area of the country where naturally grown flowers can be found this time of year, show your Valentine how much you care by selecting locally grown flowers—or herbs!—and arranging your own bouquet. A hand-picked bouquet will express your love better than imported flowers!

4. Homemade Goodies
Sometimes the best way to the heart is through the stomach! Spend an afternoon in the kitchen cooking up some delicious goodies for you and your Valentine to share. Try our recipes for homemade candy hearts, heart-shaped chocolate cherry scones or dark chocolate-dipped date-nut truffles with coconut. Or get busy whipping up one of these six herbal desserts to share by candlelight.
5. Herbal Bath Salts
Give your loved one the gift of relaxation this year with homemade herbal bath blends. Combine dried herbs, flowers, citrus peels and essential oils in a jar or pretty container and attach instructions. This gift also pairs well with a new loofah, bath brush, washcloth or towel. Create your own blend, or try one of these recipes. Go the extra mile and offer to run the bath water—or get out of the house so your sweetheart can enjoy a quiet, relaxing bath!

6. Homemade Soap
Feeling ambitious? Create a bar of natural soap in your own kitchen! Tailor the soap to your loved one’s need: lavender for relaxation, milk and honey for nourishment, and so on. Wrap the soap in creative packaging to add an extra touch of love to your gift.
7. Hand-Poured Candles
Candles are the perfect gift to set the mood on Valentine’s Day. Create a little extra romance this year by making your own candles at home. Pour pillars and votives in your sweetheart’s favorite colors and scents, or mix-and-match essential oils to create a sensual blend that will set the night off right.
