I want a green dish washing experience as much as the next greenista, but that doesn’t mean my sponge has to be an unnatural neon green color. I never even considered switching sponges as a step toward greener dish washing until I discovered Twist. Nowadays, I’m scrubbing more sustainably with Twist’s line of biodegradable, dye-free and all-natural sponges and scrubbies. Each sponge sports slightly different materials (cellulose, loofah, hemp, agave and bamboo to name a few), but they’re all as effective as they are earth-friendly.

Twist Loofah Sponge
Thanks to dye-free cellulose on one side and hard-working loofah on the other (both all-natural), this versatile sponge pulls double duty. And if you feel your sponge needs a little cleaning of its own, simply drop it into boiling water or microwave it damp for 1 minute. Photo By Dani Hurst.

Loofah Sponge

Of all the Twist sponges I’ve tried, the Loofah Sponge is by far the most useful and versatile one. It features Twist’s “naked sponge” on one side (dye-free cellulose) and a naturally tan scrubby loofah on the other; it’s gentle when you need it, but it can get down and dirty if necessary. Because the sponge is white, I was worried that with use it would quickly become dingy, but I found that as long as you wring it out regularly, it will stay pristine longer.

Twist Ravioli Hemp Scrubber
Perfect for when you need a little muscle behind your sponge but don’t want to scratch surfaces, this scrubby is made of all-natural hemp (an awesome renewable resource). This naturally brown scrubby is also good to use when dealing with spaghetti sauce or other really colorful foods to keep white sponges cleaner. Photo By Dani Hurst.

Ravioli Hemp Scrubby

Even though it is a somewhat controversial material, the fact remains that hemp (not to be confused with its hippie cousin, marijuana) is a durable, sustainable and versatile natural resource. This is why I was happy to see that Twist has incorporated hemp into one of its scrubbies. The Ravioli Hemp Scrubby is tough (but not too rough) on the outside and spongy on the inside, making it the perfect cleaning mate when you need a sturdy side kick that will help you get the job done without scraping up the crime scene. I also like to use this naturally brown scrubby when I’m washing dishes with spaghetti sauce or other highly colored foods to help preserve my white Loofah Sponge.

Twist Dish Dumpling Agave Scrubber
Replace that old plastic or metal scouring pad with this all-natural alternative. One of Twist’s sponges wrapped in agave, this scrubber means business, so be sure to test it on a small corner of your dishes before you use it to prevent any unwanted scratches. Photo By Dani Hurst.

Dish Dumpling Agave Scrubber

This lil’ guy may be cute, but he’s also who you call when you need to break out the big guns. The Dish Dumpling is an all-natural and dye-free sponge sporting a coarse agave jacket. Meant as the natural alternative to metal or plastic scouring pads, this scrubber is tough on baked-on grime and crumbly leftovers. I don’t use this scrubby as much as the others because the agave strands tend to fray a little with each use, but it is effective, especially as a natural replacement for plastic or copper scouring pads. If you’re concerned that this scrubber will be too harsh on your dishes, just be sure to test it on a little corner before going to town.

Twist Bird Mobile
Not only are Twist’s sponges sustainable, but its packaging serves multiple purposes, too. It protects the integrity of each sponge and scrubby, and each also includes plans for making a cascading bird mobile or bird feeder. Making one of these mobiles or feeders is not going to save the planet, but if more companies thought this way, we might be a step or two closer. Photo By Dani Hurst.
