USDA Announces Certified Bio-Based Product Label

Robyn Griggs Lawrence thumbnailThe U.S. Department of Agriculture has awarded the first certification label for bio-based products to Green Earth Technologies, a clean-tech company that makes environmentally friendly oils for automotive, outdoor power equipment and cleaning. The USDA defines bio-based products as those composed wholly or significantly of renewable plant, animal, marine or forestry materials. The agency plans to certify 10 more companies under the BioPreferred program standards.

“These companies are proving that innovation and agriculture can grow together to build a foundation for future growth in rural America as we work to win the future,” said USDA Deputy Secretary Kathleen Merrigan. “Consumer cleaning products, containers, and the ‘intermediate materials’ used to manufacture them—made from agriculturally-sourced ingredients—help add value to commodities, create jobs in rural communities, and can reduce our dependence on imported oil.”

Bio-based products can help increase U.S. energy independence by reducing the use of petroleum in manufactured products and may also reduce the introduction of fossil carbon into the atmosphere, mitigating potential climate change impacts, according to the USDA.

Green Earth Technologies combines American sourced, bio-based ingredients with biodegradable, renewable, recyclable and environmentally safe technologies to make products such as G-Oil bio-based full synthetic oil and API certified motor oil.

The new label makes identification of bio-based products easier for federal buyers and will increase consumer awareness of the products, the USDA predits. With the launch of the bio-based product label, USDA’s BioPreferred program is now comprised of two parts: a bio-based product procurement preference program for Federal agencies, and a voluntary labeling initiative for the broad-scale marketing of bio-based products.
