Recycled Oil Drums Make Beautiful Furniture

Last year when the Natural Home staff decorated Blair House, President Obama’s guest house, for Christmas, we fell in love with VivaTerra’s oil drum angels. Made from the scores of oil drums washed up on Haiti’s shores, the angels are simple, elegant—and make good use of a sadly abundant resource. (They’re also on sale now that Christmas has passed.)

I’m happy to see that artisans everywhere are discovering the oil drum and using it as a versatile new design material. From the “Bamako” scrap metal district of Mali, West Africa, to the Snodevormgevers design group in the Netherlands, designers and artists have been experimenting with discarded oil-drums’ aesthetically versatile form to create rustic yet refined furniture collections that would enhance any natural home. I’m eyeing the “Ray” oil drum chair with a hidden storage compartment (because who doesn’t need more storage?) for our family room. I suspect you might find something to love in one of the following four oil drum-based collections.
