This week federal regulators offered their strongest advice on healthy diets to date: eat less and cut down on processed foods high in sodium, fat and sugar. On Super Bowl Sunday, the junk food lobby will launch National Snack Food Month, encouraging us all to eat more of the bad stuff. We can just say no.
20ate.org is an open-source campaign convened by Kitchen Gardeners International to opt out of unhealthy, processed snack foods and replace them with healthy, whole foods for the 28 days of February. Participants can share their commitment and progress toward the goal via Twitter and Facebook, then donate the money they’ve saved on overpriced packaged foods to organizations such as KGI, Real Food Challenge, Food Democracy Now and Community Food Security Coalition, among others. KGI calls the campaign “a 28-day experiment in doodle detox, carrot karma and fighting the powers that be.”
