Many Natural Cereals Contain GMOs, Study Finds

Robyn Griggs Lawrence thumbnailThink you’re avoiding genetically modified ingredients when you buy cereal labeled “natural?” Unfortunately, that’s probably not the case.

A new report by The Organic & Non-GMO Report has found that many breakfast cereals labeled “natural” are likely to contain genetically modified corn, soy, canola and sugar beets, Ken Roseboro reports on EatDrinkBetter. Several natural cereal manufacturers admitted that their products may contain GM ingredients. GM ingredients are prohibited in certified organic food products.

Malt-O-Meal, which manufactures Mom’s Best Cereals; Quaker Oats, which manufactures Mother’s Natural Cereals; Bear River Valley Natural Cereals and Kashi, which is owned by Kellogg’s, all admitted that their products likely contain GMOs. Kashi stated that “many factors outside our control, such as pollen drift from nearby crops and current practices in agricultural storage, handling, and shipping, have led to an environment in North America where GMOs are not sufficiently controlled.” Bear Naked would not comment.

As we’ve noted before, seeing “natural” on a label means very little. The claim is not regulated, and buying certified organic foods is the only way to keep GMOs off your family’s table.
