Robyn Griggs Lawrence thumbnailIf it’s not already, parsley and cilantro will soon be popping up in gardens and farmers markets. In addition to gracing your family’s table, consider pampering your pet with fresh spring herbs. Lynn Alley, a California-based writer who has been cooking for her pets for years, offers up this delicious cat food recipe in the current issue of the Herb Companion. Why not plant some herbs for kitty?

 Homemade Cat Food

2 cups protein (human-grade raw ground round, chuck or sirloin; ground chicken or turkey, occasional organ meats, all from animals raised without antibiotics or hormones)

1⁄2 cup carbohydrate (any fruits or vegetables your cat enjoys, such as apples, blueberries, broccoli, asparagus, carrots, zucchini, green beans, collard greens, kale, finely chopped alfalfa sprouts, and roasted veggies such as winter squash or yams)

1⁄2 tablespoon finely chopped parsley or cilantro leaves

Pinch finely ground psyllium, celery, dill, fennel or caraway seeds (optional)

1. Combine protein and carbohydrates. Plate the food you plan to serve, and store the leftovers in a glass container in the fridge.

2. Add herbs just before serving. If desired, add the ground seeds and water. Serve.
