I lived in Chicago for years, and I knocked back more than a few green beers when celebrating St. Patrick’s Day. I don’t even want to think about what kind of artificial and synthetic dyes were used to give my suds that festive hue.
Fortunately, as Jill Ettinger points out in Organic Authority, we have better, more natural options for tinting our beer. Wheat grass and the blue-green algae spirulina—darlings of the health food crowd—will turn your beer green and give you a nice shot of nutrients to boot. Because of their high B vitamin content, these coloring agents “may also prevent some of the next-day regrets,” Ettinger predicts.
To make your natural green beer, simply add 1 tablespoon of wheat grass juice or ¼ to ½ teaspoon of spirulina to a 16-ounce beer and stir. Celebrate responsibly.
