Robyn Griggs Lawrence thumbnailHere’s a great small-space solution for folks who love to garden and grill—in limited space. London-based Black + Blum has created a Hot Pot BBQ that looks like a ceramic planter by day and turns into a barbecue grill when it’s time for dinner. Made from stainless steel with a heat-insulating ceramic coating, the Hot Pot BBQ’s lid is suitable for growing herbs and conceals the grill underneath. “Grow your herbs on the top to season the food you cook on the grill,” Black + Blum suggests. “It is ideal for small terraces or balconies and even looks good when not in use.”

Hot Pot BBQ has received high marks since it made its debut at the New York International Gift Fair a few months ago. Danielle De Vita and Kristin Coleman of called it “a creative and charming alternative to the traditional charcoal grill.” Reporting from the International Contemporary Furniture Fair last week, Lloyd Alter of Treehugger said: “It is what we call a transformer, serving more than one purpose; by day, it is an herb garden planter. You lift off the garden top and have a small stainless steel charcoal barbecue. The handle lifts the grill or it turns the food. The ash from the charcoal is mixed into the soil for the herbs, providing additional nutrients. And it is reasonably priced at $124, a rarity at ICFF.” Hot Pot BBQs will be available at the end of this month.

Martin Blum demonstrates the Hot Pot BBQ at ICFF in the video below. DIYers, take note. Could you make one of these yourself?
