Last month Ogden Publications, Natural Home’s publishing company, became a certified B Corporation. Like the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED certification for buildings, Fair Trade for coffee and Forest Stewardship Council for wood, the B Corporation certification is a third-party certification for companies with good green practices.

B Corporation companies use the power of business to solve social and environmental problems. With this certification, Ogden Publications is legally required to consider how its decisions will affect its employees, suppliers, community and the environment—not just its shareholders. Because B Corporation companies are required to be transparent with their business practices, the certification helps consumers support businesses that share their values.
Although B Corporations represent a small segment of the marketplace, B Lab, the nonprofit organization behind the certification, hopes that in a generation these corporations will reach 5 to 7 percent of the U.S. gross domestic product, about the size of the nonprofit sector today. B Lab also hopes that these companies will give individuals and communities greater economic opportunities, moving society closer to achieving a positive environmental impact and employing people in great places to work.
As of February, more than 280 companies have achieved B Corporation certification, including Seventh Generation, Numi Organic Tea, Method, IceStone, Eleek and others. For a full list of certified B Corporations, visit the B Corporation's Community page.
