The Hipcycle team offers its top picks for unique gifts and finds for spring 2012:

  • Welcome the birds back from migration with this whimsical birdhouse made from carefully woven reclaimed plastic wrappers.
  • Dress up your garden with interesting planters like these pots made from reclaimed tires and recycled tins.
  • Whether you prefer Speedway Stout or Grey Goose, choose from a wide selection of upcycled glassware made from beverage bottles that were far too beautiful to only drink from once.
  • Rescued intricate ceiling tins from historic homes create beautiful new objects like this upcycled hat rack and picture frame.
  • These Don Julio Repesado bottles were rescued from their closing time fate and turned into eco-friendly soy wax candles, available in lavender or unscented.
  • This large folding basket made from single-use chopsticks is more versatile than a typical wicker basket. The natural ability of bamboo to withstand high temperatures also allows it to be used as a colander that can easily be folded up to save counter and cabinet space.Hipcycle chopstick folding basket  Hipcycle reclaimed wood clock
  • This recycled bike chain bowl makes a lovely storage and conversation piece. Place it next to your front or backdoor as a catch-all for keys, wallets, and change.
  • Perfect for the rustic, nautical, or shabby chic living room, this throw pillow is made from an upcycled grain sack found in Central Europe.
  • Not your grandmother’s candy dish, these glass bowls are made from Crystal Head Vodka and Agavero tequila bottles.
  • This reclaimed wood clock is made from salvage from old boats, schools, homes, and other buildings in Thailand. The products are refinished and constructed by local artisans offering much-needed employment.
  • These super functional bags are made of unused polypropylene shipping material from the Dutch company Basell.

“Our goal is to bring the marketplace for upcycled products closer to the mainstream consumer,” said Andrew Sell, Founder and Chief Hipcycler. “Rather than only targeting people who are highly environmentally conscious, we want to reach the broader population. Hipcycle features a curated variety of products that are stylish and functional, and that also happen to be environmentally friendly.”

Many of the 500+ products featured on are made in the U.S. while others are purchased through a commitment to fair-trade practices. Products can be searched for by purpose (i.e., home, garden, office) or by original material (i.e., wood, fabric, glass). Hipcycle also prides itself on telling the story behind the product, from its creator to its provenance.

As it expands into new categories, Hipcycle welcomes contact from potential designers and vendors. Learn more at
