J.PattonDecember is underway, which means your holiday shopping days are numbered. If you find yourself out of gift ideas for your family and friends, I just may have the solution you’ve been searching for: homemade holiday ornaments.

I first found these orange ornaments on Good Housekeeping, but there are many variations of these instructions on the Internet. They are fun, eco-friendly gifts that your loved ones will use year after year. Plus, nothing gets you into the holiday spirit quite like constructing a heartfelt gift with your own two hands. So, give a few out as gifts, and don’t forget to save a few for your tree at home.

Orange Ornaments

• 2 oranges
• Baking sheet
• Small paring knife
• Twine

1. Cut oranges crosswise into 3/4-inch slices so that they look like little pinwheels.

2. Lay orange slices on a baking sheet or aluminum foil in the oven set at the lowest temperature (around 150 degrees).

3. Bake them for four hours.

4. Then, turn them over with a spatula.

5. Check them every hour until they have just a little bit of moisture left. The slices should still have an orange color.

6. Make a small hole at the top of each slice with your paring knife.

7. String the twine through the hole to make a loop.

8. Hang on your tree, and enjoy!

Your all-natural decorations don’t have to stop with these citrus-scented ornaments. You could construct your own cinnamon stick wreath or make herbal mistletoe. Or, for even more tips on how to spice up your holiday decorating this season, click here.
