The Journey of Constructing a Straw Bale Greenhouse

Straw bale construction makes a novice builder’s greenhouse affordable, eco-friendly and easy.

At 8,000 feet above sea level, Hesperus, Colorado, isn’t an easy place to farm. The last frost is in June, and by October the snows start falling again. Without a greenhouse, the growing season for Suzy’s flowers, vegetables, and herbs would be impossibly short. “Of course, it’s never big enough,” she says of her straw bale greenhouse. “But at the end of March when there are three feet of snow on the ground, I go in there and get a fix of green seedlings, fresh lettuce, and blooming flowers. What a season extender it is!”
