Recipes for Calcium-Rich After-School Snacks

With school in full swing, parents may be looking for new after-school snack ideas that taste so good the kids won’t know they’re actually eating something healthy

Andrea Carrothers, a registered dietitian with Horizon, makers of organic milk and dairy products, has developed several new quick, calcium-rich recipes and tips parents can pass along to their kids to ensure they are getting something tasty and healthy after school. With 1 in 10 girls and 1 in 4 boys not meeting their calcium needs, including dairy in after school snacks can be an easy way to up kids’ daily calcium intake.

Easy Cheesey Quesadilla Recipe

Ingredients:

1 whole wheat tortilla
Refried beans
Horizon shredded cheese

Directions:

Spread refried beans on whole wheat tortilla. Top with Horizon shredded cheese. Microwave for 20-30 seconds. Top with another tortilla, cut into wedges and serve with salsa for dipping.


Lots-O-Choco Cherry Smoothie

Ingredients:

1 cup (or one single serve box) Horizon chocolate milk
½ cup frozen cherries or ½ cup canned cherries and ½ cup ice

Directions:

Blend all ingredients and serve.

Yogurt Your-Way Parfait

Ingredients:

1 cup Horizon vanilla yogurt
Several slices of fruit (bananas, strawberries, grapes, apples, etc.)
¼ cup cereal, granola, nuts or dried fruit

Directions:

Layer yogurt and fruit slices. Top with cereal, granola, nuts or dried fruit and serve.


Yummy-In-Your-Tummy Yogurt Dip

Ingredients:

1 cup Horizon vanilla yogurt
2 teaspoons honey or strawberry preserves
Several slices of fruit (bananas, strawberries, grapes, apples, etc.)

Direction:

Mix vanilla yogurt with honey or preserves. Serve with fruit of your choice.
