The bed is the focal point of any bedroom, and the headboard is the focal point of the bed—so a snazzy, attention-getting headboard is key to any bedroom’s design! If your bed frame doesn’t come with a headboard attached—of if you’re “head bored” with the one you’ve got—why not try making your own? Here are a couple of DIY headboard ideas (found on Pinterest and in our archives!) to get you started.

Upcycled Chairs Headboard

For a headboard with a cheerful twist, put together brightly painted orphaned chairs, each with their own character, with this Wooden Chair Headboard project. A little bit of demolition, a swipe or two of paint, a smidgen of simple carpentry, and you can trade that tired old headboard for one with a sense of style and humor.

Old doors make great décor, especially headboards, and they’re fairly easy to find at antique and secondhand stores. You can either turn one door on its side, or stand up a pair to create a unique-looking headboard. Check out the blog Starter Home to Dream Home for a great DIY Door Headboard tutorial. Stunning but simple, shutters grouped together make an easy DIY headboard that looks great in beach- or cottage-themed homes. To make your own, check out HGTV’s instructions for building a cottage-style shutter headboard.

Tufted headboards add a touch of elegance and luxury to bedrooms. By making your own you can get the look without the price tag. Check out blogger Centsational Girl’s DIY Simple Tufted Headboard tutorial for step-by-step instructions on making your own.

Old mantels create the perfect frame against which to place your bed. A fresh coat of paint and a swath of fabric in the middle are all you need to turn a salvaged mantel into a striking headboard. For more instructions, check out Southern Living’s mantel headboard tutorial.
