It's appealing to look at a tall building or house and think about putting a turbine on top of it. This would eliminate the cost of the tower and reduce wiring costs. Unfortunately it's not that easy for two reasons.

The first relates to the quality of the wind. By putting a turbine on a building, the turbine will be higher and should get stronger winds, but quality wind is essential if a wind turbine is to produce power. Houses, much like trees, cliffs, and other wind turbines, create turbulence—effectively removing a lot of the wind’s ability to turn the blades.

Now some may argue that the roof is shaped in such a way that it won't disturb the wind too much, which brings us to the second issue with mounting a wind turbine on a house: vibrations. While spinning, the turbine will create vibrations that will make noise and can seriously damage the structural strength of a house.

With all of that said though, I have worked on small 400 watt turbines on roofs at the Folkecenter for Renewable Energy in Denmark. The turbines were mounted on concrete beams that went all the way to the ground so that addressed the issue of the house’s structural strength. However, the rule of thumb is, don't try it unless you're in a very special situation.

Also PACWIND has vertacle turbines. A little pricey though.

You folks might wish to have a look at this site. It describes a cylindrical wind turbine, more suited for the urban or residential installation.

What is the feasibility of a cylindrical turbine?

I have 2 Hornet wind generators mounted on my roof and am going to expand to make that 7. Originally mounted on pallets with 6 foot poles, if the blades are balanced correctly there is almost no vibration but I'm going to reduce the sound transfered from the Alternator, by putting them on top of used car tires (good use for them!). It may be ideal to mount away from any obstructions, but I could not afford the high cost of the poles and extra cable wire, and they give me a lot more power (enough to power this laptop and 85% of my power needs) to warrant putting them up vs not having them up at all.
The idea, is like gardening, the more you plant the greater your harvest. I've been using wind power over 25 years. And only 5 of my adult years (I'm 50) experience living on the grid. Small units like Air 403's make a lot of noise even aside from any (again, if balanced there should be none) vibrations the noise itself sounds good for the first few minutes and after that most people tend to get annoyed by them. I have to of those, and took them down because of it.
Anti-vibration may not work if your turbine is noisy to begin with. With the ones I have, I have to look (25 ft from my desk) to see if they are even turning most of the time, they are that quite.
A rooftop may not be ideal, but is better than no wind turbines, and if aligned with prevailing winds can actually increase power by concentrating/funneling the wind on the blade area.
